Schematic elevation
An openwork silhouette that lets the ceiling plane show through between members. It reads lighter than a solid run and introduces a repeating diagonal that changes as you move through the room.
Best considered for rooms where a solid beam would feel heavy, and ceilings with generous height to give the pattern room to read.
Schematic cross-section
A rounded silhouette with the irregular line of a hewn timber. The most overtly rustic of the directions, and the one most sensitive to scale — proportion against ceiling height matters more here than anywhere else.
Best considered for rustic, lodge and southwest-influenced rooms, and vaulted ceilings with the height to carry a round section.
Texture character
Six directions, described by what they look and feel like rather than by a collection name.
A near-flat surface that reads as a considered plane rather than as timber. Light travels evenly across it, so the beam holds its line and the room stays quiet.
Best considered for contemporary rooms where the silhouette should carry the idea, not the grain.
A directional, evenly-cut surface with a repeating linear grain. It gives a beam texture you can read from across the room without tipping the space into rustic.
Best considered for transitional rooms, and long runs where a directional grain reinforces the line.
An irregular, faceted surface that catches light unevenly. The variation is the point: no two lengths read identically, and the ceiling gains depth as daylight moves.
Best considered for rooms with strong natural light, and ceilings that benefit from visible craft.
Weathered character with tonal variation across the face — the look of a timber that has had a previous life. Warm and cool notes sit side by side, which helps a beam relate to mixed finishes elsewhere in a room.
Best considered for rooms with layered materials, and palettes that mix warm and grey tones.
Deep relief and strong shadow across the surface. The most assertive direction of the group, and the one that most changes how a ceiling reads from the doorway.
Best considered for vaulted and lodge-influenced rooms with the height to carry a heavy texture.
Sun-warmed colour over a moderately worked surface. Reads clay and amber rather than cocoa, which sits comfortably beside plaster walls and desert-facing daylight.
Best considered for southwest and desert-contemporary rooms, and palettes built on warm neutrals.
Finish family
Directions rather than named stains. The exact finish is settled against a physical reference and the materials already in your room.
Mid-tone timber character — the most forgiving against mixed palettes.
